√2022 SsangYong Musso price and specs

The SsangYong Musso has been updated with a fully-digital instrument cluster and various interior additions for 2022 – but prices are up $800, and Australia misses out on key safety and engine upgrades offered overseas.

  • Australia misses out on overseas power boost, safety upgrades
  • Priced from $35,790 drive-away

The 2022 SsangYong Musso ute will arrive in Australia around June, with more technology than before – and an $800 price rise across the range.

All 2022 Musso variants will gain a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard – replacing the existing 7.0-inch display – along with a new overhead console with LED map lights, seatbelt reminders, LED interior lights and body-coloured handles and mirrors, replacing black ones.

SsangYong has increased prices across the range by $800 to account for the updates – compounding a $1000 price hike applied in mid-2021, when the ute’s previous update arrived, comprising a new front fascia and revised styling elements.

However, Australians will miss out on a host of changes available in South Korea, including an uprated 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which develops 149kW and 400-441Nm.

Fitting this engine would have required the addition of an AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) tank below the tray – occupying the space needed for a full-size spare wheel, which SsangYong Australia determined to be a crucial inclusion given Australia’s long-distance country roads.

Instead, the engine fitted to local models develops 133kW/400Nm in six-speed manual models, or 133kW/420Nm with six-speed automatic variants, powering all four wheels with the help of a low-range mode and auto-locking rear differential.

Australia also misses out on any of the safety upgrades available overseas, including the addition of lane-keep assist, lane centring assist and braking functionality for the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems – thanks to new electric power steering.

The SsangYong Musso is also one of the last new vehicles on sale with a two-point lap seatbelt for the centre rear seat – compared to the three-point ‘lap sash’ belt fitted to every other seat in the vehicle.

In addition to the $800 price rises across the range, the price of metallic paint has also risen from $495 to $595.

Over the standard ELX and Ultimate variants, buyers can pay $1500 more for XLV models, adding a 300mm-longer tub, and rear leaf springs (on the XLV only), boosting payload from 790kg across the standard range, to between 880kg (Ultimate XLV) and 1025kg (ELX XLV).

The Luxury pack for the Ultimate adds dual-zone climate control, nappa leather trim, electric front seats, a sunroof, and heated rear seats.

The 2022 SsangYong Musso is due in Australian showrooms around June – three months later than expected, due to component shortages surrounding the car’s electronic control units (ECUs).
