Meet the interior of the next Ford Mustang – but for fans of retro design and physical buttons, it won’t make for easy viewing.

The interior of the next-generation 2024 Ford Mustang has been snapped with minimal camouflage, ahead of the car’s full reveal expected within the next six to 12 months.

While the next Mustang’s exterior continues to be clothed in heavy camouflage, images of the interior taken by our spy photography partners, with little to no covering, reveal a far more tech-focused affair than the cabin of Ford’s current two-door, last updated in 2018.

The new Mustang (codenamed S650) looks to ditch much of the retro theme of its predecessor – including its ‘double hump’ dashboard design, circular air vents and circular steering wheel centre – in favour of a pair of big displays placed up high, angled towards the driver.

Size is difficult to gauge in these initial images, however the central touchscreen could be the 13.2-inch unit out of the facelifted Focus hatchback, running Ford’s latest Sync 4 software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air updates.

Most of the physical climate control switches have been swapped for buttons in the infotainment system – though there’s still a window defroster button on a bank of switches, alongside hazard lights, a drive mode selector, stability control, and auto start-stop.

In front of the driver is a digital instrument cluster – similar in size to the 12.3-inch display in the current Mustang (codenamed S550) – with readouts for speed, rpm, fuel and what appears to be temperature.

Between the front occupants is the same automatic gear selector as today’s Ford Mustang, which is likely paired to the same 10-speed torque converter transmission. This indicates the new sports car won’t adopt the electronic rotary dial seen in the new Ford Ranger ute, which uses the same ‘10R80’ gearbox as the Mustang.

Little new is revealed in the latest batch of exterior images, showcasing the same long-bonnet fastback shape now familiar to Mustang fans, but with sharper LED lighting and restyled front and rear fascias.

At least one of the three cars caught by Drive’s spy photography partners looks to be a V8-powered GT variant, judging by its four exhaust outlets and larger alloy wheels. Two of the cars are convertibles with Continental SportContact 6 tyres, while the third is a coupe with Pirelli rubber.

Under the bonnet is expected to be a similar choice of 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and 5.0-litre V8 engines as today’s Mustang – though rumours suggest hybrid technology may be added to these engines to improve performance and efficiency.

The new car is also believed to be underpinned by an evolution of its predecessor’s platform, rather than the rear- and all-wheel drive ‘CD6’ architecture beneath the US-market Ford Explorer family SUV. Reports suggest the Mustang will retain rear-wheel drive only, with no all-wheel drive available.

The new Ford Mustang is expected to go into production early next year, as a 2024 model.

Australian launch plans are yet to be confirmed, however the relative success of the current model is understood to ensure the nameplate’s future in local showrooms.
