√Apple CarPlay earns its stripes in world-first police trial in Australia

Police in Western Australia are trialling new technology that brings emergency communications to Apple CarPlay in modern patrol cars.

Police in Western Australia are rolling out a new infotainment system specifically designed for law enforcement.

The software is based on Apple CarPlay but developed in conjunction with US tech company Motorola, one of the world’s largest suppliers of law enforcement communications equipment.

According to police, the voice-activated interface can direct police to accidents, provide live crime scene updates, and communicate with other devices.

“We’re the first law enforcement agency in the world that has been chosen to have a look at CarPlay and see how it performs in the field,” said Sergeant Ian Connell in a media statement.

“Having tested it loads and loads, I can see it works admirably – it benefits police, [and] it benefits the community.

“Western Australian police in the past 18 months have become world leaders in the way we use tech with our frontline police officers.”

Police in Western Australia currently use Skoda Superb, Kia Stinger, and Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles – among others – on duty.

For now it is unclear if police agencies in other Australian states are likely to adopt the new Motorola interface for Apple CarPlay systems.

Drive has contacted law enforcement agencies outside of Western Australia for further information.
