√2022 Toyota GR86 nears Australia, 10th Anniversary special rumoured
Toyota’s new GR86 coupe is due in Australia by October, possibly priced around $35,000 – and a 10th Anniversary special could be right behind it.
The hotly-anticipated 2022 Toyota GR86 sports car is due in Australian showrooms by the end of September – but a 10th Anniversary special edition could be hot on its heels, according to new rumours.
Previously confirmed only for the ‘second half of 2022’, Toyota Australia has clarified the GR86 is slated to arrive in the third quarter of the year (July to September) – around six to nine months after its Subaru BRZ twin, launched in early 2022.
Pricing and specifications are still yet to be confirmed, however dealers have reportedly been advised to expect a base price of less than $35,000 plus on-road costs – around $3000 more than the old model, but $4000 to $5000 cheaper than the BRZ.
Historically, the two variants of the Toyota 86 offered in Australia have straddled the entry-level BRZ – suggesting a base GR86 with smaller (17-inch) wheels above $35,000, and a flagship model with larger (18-inch) wheels around $40,000.
All models will be powered by a new 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four engine, sending 174kW and 250Nm to the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
While a pair of standard GR86 variants are expected to debut the new model in Australia, the range could later be bolstered by a 10th Anniversary edition, introduced to celebrate a decade since the original 86 and BRZ twins launched in 2012.
According to Japanese website Creative Trend, a 10th Anniversary variant based on the flagship RZ grade will go on sale in Japan in early July, with the only aesthetic difference being a new orange exterior paint colour.
While the report says it will be a new light orange colour not previously offered on a Toyota, it may be created to pay homage to the hero Velocity Orange colour of the original 86 of 2012 – later recreated with Solar Orange on a 2017 special edition.
It remains to be seen if this special edition is made available outside of Japan or the United States, or if it will be limited to a certain number of vehicles.
