√Best-selling electric cars in Australia 2022

Electric vehicle sales are increasing rapidly in Australia, led by Tesla and its Model 3 sedan. Here’s the month-by-month breakdown of how the market is performing so far this year.

Electric car sales are on the rise in Australia, with 4469 examples reported as sold in the first four months of this year – up 250 per cent over the same period last year.

That percentage excludes long-time market leader Tesla, which only began reporting its sales data – compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries – in March this year.

While the VFACTS reports include data for dedicated electric cars sold as standalone models – such as the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Nissan Leaf – it doesn’t include figures for electric versions of petrol-powered cars, making a definitive list of the top-selling EVs each month difficult to collate.

But with data provided by manufacturers, Drive has compiled a guide to the best-selling electric cars in Australia each month so far in 2022, model by model. This story will be updated throughout the year with new monthly data as it becomes available.

Analysis

The Tesla Model 3 continues to lead the way for EV sales, off the back of strong performance in the first three months of the year.

Sales crashed to just 52 car in April – though this isn’t unexpected, as Tesla delivers its vehicles in batches towards the end of each quarter of the year (March, June, September and December).

The ‘best of the rest’ is the Hyundai Kona Electric (394 sales) – which posted its best sales month on record in March – followed by the Mercedes-Benz EQA (383) and Hyundai Ioniq Electric (282).

Manufacturer figures report 253 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric SUVs as sold so far this year – and despite a $76,990 price tag and constrained supply, it topped the overall electric car sales charts in April, with 122 vehicles sold.

The previous best-selling non-Tesla electric car, the MG ZS EV, has lost its spot on the sales ranking, after stock of the current model dried up at the end of February, ahead of a facelifted model due from July this year.

MG Australia would not provide month-by-month figures for ZS EV deliveries – therefore the sales number listed in the table above is estimated from the 111 confirmed ZS EV sales in the first three months of the year, and that pre-facelift model stock dried up in late February.

According to an MG Australia spokesperson, the brand took 77 ZS EV orders in January, 47 in February, 193 in March and 129 in April – however all of these have yet to correlate to customer deliveries.

At the bottom of the list is the BMW i3 – the last example of which sold in April – below the Jaguar I-Pace, Renault Kangoo ZE van (also in run-out) and Mazda MX-30 Electric.

Footnotes

With no exact figures for these months, the Tesla Model 3’s January and February sales numbers have been calculated from the combined total for these months.

Mazda MX-30 Electric sales are estimated, based on the nine cars sold from January to March. Mazda Australia told Drive fewer than 20 examples have been sold so far this year.
