√VFACTS: Australia’s last Nissan 370Z sold in May
It’s the end of an era for Nissan’s sixth-generation Z car, with the final 370Zs selling in recent weeks ahead of a new model’s arrival within months.
The last Nissan 370Z sports car has rolled off Australian showroom floors, closing the book on what’s likely the final naturally-aspirated, ‘analogue’ ‘Zed’ car.
The two 370Z examples reported as sold in the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS sales report for May 2022 are the last of their kind in Australia, a Nissan spokesperson indicated to Drive, months ahead of the new Z’s arrival.
In total, 5243 Nissan 370Z coupes and Roadsters have been reported as sold locally since its launch in 2009 – an average of about 404 cars sold each year it was in production (2009 to 2021), peaking in 2010 with 745 sales.
While it managed to surpass the 350Z’s 4988 sales over its lifetime, the later 370Z needed more than 12 years to do so (passing it from April 2021), compared to the earlier car’s eight.
Launched in 2009, the 370Z was a more dynamic evolution of the earlier 350Z, removing weight, cutting 100mm from the wheelbase behind the occupants, widening the tracks, and fitting a larger 3.7-litre version of Nissan’s ‘VQ’ series V6.
Outputs rose from 230kW/355Nm to 245kW/362Nm – but despite a roster of new tech features, the $67,990 plus on-road costs launch coupe variant cost less than a flagship 350Z ($69,990).
Nissan 370Z prices hit a high of $79,500 for an automatic Roadster in 2013 – but multiple price cuts saw the same car fall to $63,490 by 2017, or for a manual coupe, as low as $49,990 (excluding special editions).
The 370Z will be replaced in the coming months by the simply-named Nissan Z – the first Zed car without a numerical designation – priced from $73,300 plus on-road costs in standard ‘Z Coupe’ form.
While it’s the most expensive two-seat Nissan Z car ever sold in Australia, it’s also the most powerful thanks to a 298kW/475Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, and more technology, comfort and safety than any of its predecessors.
A limited-run Proto Spec edition will be available, priced from $80,700 plus on-road costs, making it the third-most expensive Nissan Z car ever sold in Australia (behind the Z32 300ZX and its 25th Anniversary edition). All production slots have been allocated.
