√Pete Davidson’s touching reason for driving a Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Pete Davidson claims he ‘doesn’t give a s*** about cars’, but drives a Mercedes-Benz S-Class as a nod to his grandfather and late father.
Pete Davidson might be famous for his wild on-screen antics and colourful romantic history but when it comes to cars, the comedian likes to play it safe.
Davidson, who found fame on US skit show Saturday Night Live, has previously admitted he “couldn’t give less of a s*** about cars,” but drives a black Mercedes-Benz S-Class worth an estimated $250,000.
The 28-year-old purchased his first S-Class back in 2018, after his brief engagement to singer Ariana Grande propelled him to global stardom almost overnight.
To cope with the sudden public scrutiny, the comedian would take the silver sedan on long drives around New York City in the middle of the night in an effort to evade paparazzi.
He later upgraded to a black S-Class, famously using it to pick up now ex-girlfriend Kim Kardashian from the airport in photos that all but confirmed their relationship in early 2022.
However, given a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class kicks off from $244,700 before on-road costs, one could argue it’s a fairly indulgent purchase for someone who claims not to care about cars.
According to Davidson, his main concern when buying the car was safety, telling GQ Magazine: “As long as I can’t die in it, I’m pretty for it.”
He also appreciates the Mercedes’ active safety features, which include active lane-keeping, driver attention detection and seat bolsters than inflate when cornering, to keep you prevent you sliding in your seat.
“I like those cars that’ll guide you back onto the road,” he said.
“My car hugs me. The seats give me the hugs that I never got when I was little! When I make turns, the seat’s like, ‘I got you.’ And I’m like, ‘Finally, someone got me!’ Thank you, Mercedes.”
Davidson has even jokingly drawn parallels between the car and his father, a New York firefighter who died in the September 11 attacks when Davidson was seven years old.
“That should be their [Mercedes’] commercial: ‘Did you not have a father growing up? Drive around in circles with our new Mercedes-Benz, the car that hugs,'” he joked to GQ.
But Davidson’s enthusiasm for the S-Class can actually be traced back to his childhood, when his grandfather would share his dreams of owning the luxury limo.
After buying his first S-Class, Davidson shared a video to Instagram showing his grandfather taking a long-awaited ride in the car.
“Since I was five years old my grandpa always told me he wanted to drive a S-Class. The other day my mom took him out in mine. This video makes me cry,” Davidson captioned the video.
When some of Davidson’s followers suggested he gift his grandfather the car, he replied: “Guys I’d give him the car but he can barely drive. Did you watch the video?”
Powered by a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine, the S-Class outputs an impressive 270kW and 600Nm, and is capable of hitting a top speed of 250km/h.
Davidson only has one other car in his collection, and it’s another Mercedes-Benz – a black G-Class SUV, which is usually priced from $365,900 before on-road costs.
At current prices, that brings the total value of Davidson’s garage to more than $600,000 – not bad for a guy who doesn’t “give a s*** about cars”.
