√2022 Haval Jolion receives five-star ANCAP safety rating

The Haval Jolion from Great Wall Motors has received high marks in ANCAP safety testing, the third Chinese vehicle to earn five stars so under the latest criteria.

The 2022 Haval Jolion from Chinese car giant Great Wall Motors (GWM) has earned a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Applicable to all variants except the new hybrid, the Jolion is the fourth vehicle from GWM (including Haval) to carry a five-star ANCAP rating – and the third and final in the company’s current line-up, alongside the GWM Ute and Haval H6, all tested under the latest 2020-22 criteria.

Results of 90 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 84 per cent in Child Occupant Protection, 64 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 92 per cent in Safety Assist technology were recorded.

Good performance was noted in various areas of assessment, including the driver in the full-width frontal and side-impact pole tests, both front occupants in the side crash tests, and its advanced safety technology.

The Jolion’s Safety Assist result is the equal third highest recorded under ANCAP’s latest criteria, matching the Lexus NX luxury SUV, and behind the Subaru Outback wagon (96 per cent) and Tesla Model Y electric SUV (98 per cent).

While the Haval Jolion earned full marks for its lane-keep assist system, its autonomous emergency braking system was noted as “adequate” overall, with “weak” performance in one of the night-time pedestrian detection tests, and a daytime test approaching a cyclist from behind.

“Poor” performance was recorded for pedestrians striking the windscreen pillars, and at the base of the windscreen, while “marginal” and “adequate” results were recorded for certain areas of the adult and child dummies’ bodies in frontal offset and side-impact tests.

“This five-star ANCAP safety rating for the Jolion is the third awarded to GWM under ANCAP’s stringent 2020-2022 protocols,” ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg said in a media statement.

“There has been a significant amount of interest in a rating for this model and it has been shown to offer a high standard of safety.”
