Overseas pricing for the Nissan Ariya indicates the electric SUV could cost less than $70,000 in Australia, but the Japanese company is yet to confirm a local launch.

Pricing for the 2023 Nissan Ariya has been revealed in the US and UK, giving Australian buyers an indication of how much they could expect to pay for the electric SUV – if it arrives in local showrooms.

Based on calculations by Drive – using US and UK pricing as a guide – the Ariya could be priced from less than $70,000 before on-road costs if Nissan commits to selling the electric car in Australia.

Last month, Nissan’s local boss Adam Paterson told media “Ariya is still unconfirmed for Australia,” claiming the company was prioritising countries with high demand for the electric vehicles such as the US, Europe and Japan.

According to UK publication Automotive Management, wait times for the Nissan Ariya are between five and seven months, while in Japan, orders for the electric SUV were suspended in July due to a lack of supply.

The Nissan Ariya went on sale in the US this week, with the entry-level single-motor ‘Engage’ variant priced from $US43,190, excluding delivery and shipping charges – about $AU66,600 when converted to Australian currency.

Nissan offers nine variants of the Ariya in the US, headed by the flagship Platinum+ dual-motor variant, which is priced from $US60,190 – equivalent to $AU92,800 based on today’s exchange rates.

The Nissan Ariya no longer qualifies for the US Government’s $US7500 electric car rebate, after legislation passed last month required eligible vehicles to be built in North America.

In the UK, the Nissan Ariya has been on sale since the end of 2021, with its seven variants priced from £43,845 ($AU73,100) to £56,290 ($AU93,800) drive-away.

However, these prices include the UK’s 20 per cent value added tax (VAT) applied to purchases in the UK – twice as much as Australia’s 10 per cent GST.

With VAT removed and GST applied, the Nissan Ariya’s least- and most-expensive UK variants are equivalent to $AU66,900 and $AU85,900 respectively.

In the US, Europe and Asia, the Nissan Ariya is available with a single-motor front-wheel drive and a dual-motor all-wheel drive layout, powered by a 63kWh or 87kWh battery, depending on spec.

According to Nissan, the most basic version of the Ariya has a maximum driving range of up to 403km on the European WLTP test cycle, while variants equipped with a larger battery have a distance claim of 530km.
