√2022 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y recalled in Australia

Almost 16,000 examples of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y – Australia’s best-selling electric cars – have been recalled due to a software fault, causing the tail-lights to not operate correctly.

Tesla Australia has recalled 15,914 examples of its 2022 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, due to the electric sedan and SUV’s tail-lights not illuminating correctly, caused by a software fault.

The affected Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs were delivered to Australian customers by Tesla this year.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a software error, the tail-lamps on one or both sides may not illuminate as intended. If this occurs during dark conditions, the traffic behind will have reduced visibility and may not be able to identify the vehicle.

“Note: Brake lamps, reverse lamps and turn signal lamps are not affected by this condition and continue to operate as intended.

“If the traffic behind is unable to identify the vehicle, it could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Between the start of January and the end of October 2022, Tesla has reported 15,132 cars as sold in Australia – 8680 Model 3s and 6452 Model Ys.

The electric-car company’s November sales are not due to be announced until the first week of December, although it is expected to include the additional 782 electric cars covered by the recall.

Tesla has advised the recall will be addressed by updating the vehicle’s software, which does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment.

“The software release that contains the remedy has deployed over-the-air (OTA) to all affected vehicles,” the recall notice said.

“If your vehicle is running software version 2022.40.100 or 2022.40.1 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue. You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ on your touchscreen.”
