√2023 Honda Civic Type R filmed at the Nurburgring, record imminent?
Honda’s high-performance hatchback has been filmed undertaking hot laps at the Nurburgring, suggesting the new Civic Type R is aiming to set a lap record.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R could become the fastest front-wheel-drive production car to lap the Nurburgring motor racing circuit in Germany, with the Japanese car-maker reportedly undertaking extensive testing for two days last week.
In a post on social media platform Instagram, Misha Charoudin – a part-time YouTube star who works as a ‘taxi driver’ at the Nurburgring – uploaded a video of Honda’s new Civic Type R being pushed to its limits at the iconic 20-kilometre track.
According to Mr Charoudin, Honda booked the circuit two consecutive days, sending two examples of the Civic Type R around the track for testing.
While Mr Chardoudin was unable to speculate about the Honda Civic Type R’s lap times, he suggested the weather conditions were ideal for a record lap, with relatively cool ambient temperatures helping the car’s tyres and turbocharged engine.
In April 2017, the previous-generation ‘FK8’ Honda Civic Type R became the fastest front-wheel-drive car at the Nurburgring – setting a time of seven minutes and 43.80 seconds, almost seven seconds faster than its ‘FK2’ predecessor.
The FK8 Civic Type R’s record stood until April 2019 when it was eclipsed by the Renault Megane RS Trophy R, with the French hot hatch lowering the bar to seven minutes and 40.1 seconds around the Nurburgring’s 20.832km layout.
In April, the upcoming ‘FL5’ Civic Type R set a new front-wheel-drive production car lap record at Japan’s Suzuka Circuit last year, posting a time of two minutes and 23.120 seconds.
The Honda Civic Type R beat the outgoing stripped-out, track-focused Civic Type R Limited Edition by eight-tenths of a second and the Renault Megane RS Trophy R by more than two seconds.
Revealed in July 2022, the new ‘FL5’ Civic Type R is Honda’s most powerful hot hatch to date, with its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 235kW and 420Nm in Australia – 7kW and 20Nm more than its ‘FK8’ predecessor.
The Honda Civic Type R receives an additional 8kW power bump overseas thanks to better quality fuel in regions such as Japan and Europe.
The new FL5 Civic Type R is approximately 40kg heavier than the previous FK8, and Honda claims the new Civic’s chassis is 19 per cent stiffer than its predecessor.
As previously reported, Honda is yet to announce pricing for the 2023 Civic Type R, although using Japanese prices as a guide, the new hot hatch could cost $65,000 to $70,000 drive-away in Australia – about $10,000 more than the outgoing model.
