√2022 Tesla Model Y gets off-road treatment

Lamborghini and Porsche have already added an off-road twist to their sports cars, now comes a off-road version of a Tesla Model Y from an independent tuning firm in Europe.

First it was Porsche and Lamborghini – now a Tesla electric car has been given the off-road treatment with an extreme Model Y from Germany.

The difference is the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato supercar off-roaders are both factory-backed models, while the Tesla Model Y is the work of a European tuning firm called Delta4x4.

The off-road kit for the Tesla Model Y costs a whopping €13,800 ($AU21,700), which is close to a third of the cost of the standard vehicle.

Delta4x4 began its Tesla work with a set of special 20×8 inch alloy wheels shod with off-road tyres, and a 25mm lift kit, to boost the ground clearance on the Tesla Model X (pictured above) for a Norwegian customer.

Now it has applied the off-road treatment to the Tesla Model Y, with over-sized wheels and tyres, a bank of LED driving lights and a heavy-duty roof rack.

Announcing the details, Delta4x4 says its upgrade work enables the Tesla Model Y “the freedom to move along exceedingly well on carved-out forest paths, across fields, dirt roads and tracks”.

Although it’s not an extreme off-roader, the company says it has the extra grip for driving in snow and sand.

The most obvious change to the Tesla Model Y is the 35mm lift kit for the suspension and 20-inch alloys with 265×45 Continental Cross Contact ATR tyres – which explains the advertising signwriting.

The body is widened with 60mm fender flares, front and rear, allowing a total ground clearance of 220mm.

There is a bank of four PIAA driving lamps in the nose and the roof rack is set up to carry recovery boards, a shovel, water canisters, a spare wheel, and storage cases.

It can also carry a roof tent, similar to the one Delta4x4 used on its conversion work on a Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV.

The most expensive part of the Delta4x4 package for the Tesla Model Y – for its German customers – is the suspension package at approximately $AU7500.

The wheels and tyres come in at approximately $US7100 and the roof rack is priced at $4500.
