√Video: Faster Ferrari SF90 variant spied testing

This prototype could be a preview of a hardcore version of the Ferrari SF90 supercar, expected to be revealed next year with a styling update and more power.

What is believed to be a higher-performance variant of the Ferrari SF90 has been filmed at the Italian marque’s test track, showing off a number of minor cosmetic tweaks for the flagship supercar ahead of its possible unveiling next year.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, spy videographer ‘Varryx’ captured the SF90 prototype being driven at speed around Fiorano – Ferrari’s private test track in Modena, Italy.

The Ferrari SF90’s exterior appears to be largely unchanged, though partial camouflage on the front bumper and bonnet suggests the hardcore grade will gain cosmetic tweaks – similar to the 458 and 458 Speciale variants, as well as the 488 and 488 Pista.

The lack of extensive camouflage – compared to some recent SF90 prototypes spied on European roads – has led some online to speculate this car is also being used to develop a track-only version of the SF90 for a one-make racing series. However, Ferrari is yet to confirm either option.

A pair of air vents are located underneath the SF90 prototype’s headlights, while a more prominent bonnet vent points to greater cooling capabilities for its turbocharged V8 engine.

The flagship Ferrari SF90 variant is likely to receive a power boost, with its twin-turbocharged V8 engine and three electric motors expected to produce more than the 735kW currently available.

In the past, Ferrari has extracted up to 7.5 per cent more power from its hardcore variants compared to the cars they are based on, having turned up the 488’s turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine from 493kW to 530kW to create the 488 Pista.

While Varryx refers to the supercar as the SF90VS (for Versione Speciale), this name is likely a placeholder. For context, the 812’s Competizione track-focused grade was called 812VS on social media while undergoing testing.

Ferrari is yet to confirm its plans for a new SF90 variant, although overseas reports claim the new flagship grade may debut next year.

In Australia, the Ferrari SF90 is priced from $846,888 plus on-road costs for the fixed-roof ‘Stradale’, while the ‘Spider’ convertible starts from $929,888 – making it the second-most expensive new car in the country.
