√2023 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid price and specs: Due in Australia this year

Plug-in hybrid power has returned to Audi Australia showrooms after a five-year absence, with a new version of the popular Audi Q5 mid-size SUV.

  • 2023 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e pricing and specifications
  • First Audi plug-in hybrid in Australia since 2018
  • Available in wagon and Sportback body style
  • Priced from $102,900 plus on-road costs

The 2023 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has been confirmed for Australia in the second half of this year, priced from $102,900 plus on-road costs.

The Q5 PHEV – or using its full name, the Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro S Line – is the first Audi plug-in hybrid sold in Australia since the Q7 E-Tron large SUV was axed in 2018 (not to be confused with today’s E-Tron electric range).

Available to order now, it is priced from $102,900 plus on-road costs as a traditional Q5 ‘wagon’, or $110,200 plus on-road costs in coupe-styled Sportback guise – about $18,000 to $20,000 more than the next petrol models below.

Both versions powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 195kW and 370Nm, mated with a 105kW/350Nm electric motor for a combined output of 270kW and 500Nm.

A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, for a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.3 seconds – the quickest Q5 on sale, aside from the SQ5 performance hero.

Audi claims the 14.4kWh battery (net, or 17.9kWh gross) on board can deliver up to 55km of electric driving range (based on European WLTP testing).

The Q5 PHEV’s battery can be recharged from empty to full on a 7.2kWh AC home wallbox in “around” 2.5 hours, while charging via a 240-volt home power point is also available through one of two cables included with the car.

There are four PHEV-specific modes: Hybrid (which mixes petrol and electric power), EV (which runs on electric power only), Hold (which uses the engine to maintain the battery’s charge level), and Charge (which tops up the battery using petrol power).

Standard features are broadly similar to high-grade petrol Audi Q5 models, including LED or matrix LED headlights (depending on body style), 20-inch wheels, dual interior screens, leather seats, 10-speaker stereos, a hands-free electric tailgate, and a suite of advanced safety features.

Optional on the plug-in hybrid is a Technik package – but each body style adds a different set of feature when this option box is ticked. A list of standard features, pricing and options is below.

The 2023 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro S Line plug-in hybrid is now available to order, ahead of first deliveries expected early in the second half of this year (likely as a 2024 model-year vehicle).

Rivals for the new Audi include the Volvo XC60 Recharge PHEV, Lexus NX450h+, BMW X3 xDrive30e, and soon-to-be-discontinued Mercedes-Benz GLC300e.
