The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE electric sedan – the battery-powered equivalent to the E-Class – is now on sale in Australia priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs.
The smaller companion to the flagship EQS limousine – and the sixth member of the Mercedes-EQ electric family in Australia – the new EQE sedan rivals the likes of the Porsche Taycan, Audi E-Tron GT, Genesis Electrified G80 and Tesla Model S.
It is a similar overall length to the petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan – but the EQE is 101mm wide, 57mm taller, and 181mm longer in wheelbase.
Three model grades will initially be available in Australia – the rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz EQE300, all-wheel-drive EQE350, and flagship, all-wheel-drive Mercedes-AMG EQE53 performance variant.
The EQE300’s $134,900 plus on-road costs matches the petrol-powered, rear-wheel-drive E350 sedan – but it is nearly $30,000 dearer than the cheapest E-Class on sale, the E200 ($106,600 plus on-road costs).
Meanwhile, the AMG EQE53 4Matic+ slots between the two all-wheel-drive AMG versions of the E-Class – the turbo inline six-cylinder E53 ($175,400 plus on-roads), and twin-turbo V8-powered E63 S ($272,000 plus on-roads).
Powering the Mercedes-Benz EQE300 is a 180kW/550Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels, fed by an 89kWh battery pack for a claimed 626km of driving range – albeit according to lenient NEDC lab testing – and a 7.3-second 0-100km/h time.
Standard equipment includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, a Burmester premium stereo, panoramic sunroof, heated electric seats, 20-inch wheels, AMG exterior styling, Digital Light adaptive LED headlights, and a full suite of advanced safety technology.
The Mercedes-Benz EQE350 4Matic adds $20,000 to the list price, and upgrades to dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, combined outputs of 215kW and 765Nm, a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds.
It is claimed to offer 590km of driving range (under NEDC guidelines). Overseas specifications show the EQE350 and AMG EQE53 are equipped with large 90.6kWh batteries.
According to Mercedes-Benz Australia, the EQE350 4Matic’s sole addition over the EQE300 is an AMG rear lip spoiler.
The top-of-the-range model is the Mercedes-AMG EQE53 4Matic+, which gains more powerful electric motors for 460kW and 950Nm combined, good for a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds, and 500km of claimed NEDC driving range.
The AMG Dynamic Plus package will be available as a $7400 option, which adds a Race Start launch-control mode that boosts outputs to 505kW/1000Nm, an AMG Track Pace app, new AMG driving sounds, a lower 0-100km/h time of 3.3 seconds, and an increased 240km/h top speed (up from 220km/h).
The AMG flagship adds AMG exterior styling elements, nappa leather front sports seats with ventilation, an AMG Performance nappa leather steering wheel, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE range is on sale in Mercedes-Benz showrooms now. The Mercedes-EQ range is due to expand later this year with a flagship EQS SUV, and smaller EQE SUV.
