√2024 Mitsubishi Triton caught on camera in Thailand, one step closer to Australia
The first spy photos of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton appeared this time last year in Europe. Now camouflaged prototypes have been caught on camera much closer to Australia.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton ute is one giant step closer to Australia – with fresh spy photos emerging from Thailand, where the vehicle is manufactured.
This time last year, the first spy photos of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton appeared in Europe, where early development vehicles were undergoing snow and ice testing near the Arctic Circle.
Now a new range of camouflaged prototypes have been caught on camera in Thailand ahead of a formal unveiling of the vehicle near the middle of this year – and ahead of local showroom arrivals either late this year or early 2024.
The photos show the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton has grown in every dimension, with a bigger cabin, a larger tray, and a broader footprint – to bring it closer in size to the top-selling Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger pick-ups.

The Mitsubishi Triton is also a pointer to what we can expect for the next-generation Nissan Navara – which will be a twin under the skin following the recent joint venture between the former rivals.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is due to go into production and on sale about a year before the 2025 Nissan Navara, under the “leader, follower” strategy adopted by the alliance partners.
What remains a mystery for now is what engine is under the bonnet. Is it a Mitsubishi diesel, a Nissan diesel, or a newly developed diesel engine jointly developed by the two brands?
The next Mitsubishi Triton is understood to have retained its Super Select all-wheel-drive system which can also be used on sealed roads; most rival utes can only operate in all-wheel drive on dirt or sand.
A puzzling aspect of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton test vehicles: they appear to show rear-wheel drum brakes rather than discs. It is unclear if this arrangement is for all model grades or only certain model grades.
Most models in the new Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok line-up are equipped with four-wheel-disc brakes.
And budget-priced utes out of China (LDV and GWM) and South Korea (Ssangyong) also have four-wheel-disc brakes as standard.
Although it is holding its age well, the new Mitsubishi Triton can’t come soon enough – it is already one of the oldest vehicles in the segment.
The Mitsubishi Triton in showrooms today had a significant facelift in 2018, and launched as a ‘new’ model in 2015.
However, the 2015 Mitsubishi Triton update was in fact largely based on the chassis of the previous generation (albeit with significant engineering improvements, and a more comfortable driver’s seating position).
Drive understands Mitsubishi will start to release teaser images of the new Triton in the coming months.
As previously reported, a number of 2024 Mitsubishi Triton test vehicles have been in Australia for the past 12 months – joined by a team of engineers from Australia and New Zealand – undergoing local testing.
However, so far they have not been caught on camera on local roads.
