√2023 Cupra Born earns five-star safety rating
With its showroom arrival just a handful of weeks away, the Cupra Born has been given top marks for safety.
The 2023 Cupra Born has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), shortly before the electric hatchback is due to arrive in local showrooms.
Cupra is the first Volkswagen Group brand to launch an electric car priced less than $100,000 in Australia, with the Born scoring relatively well against its battery-powered rivals across ANCAP’s crash tests.
The Cupra Born recorded results of 93 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 89 per cent in Child Occupant Protection, 73 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 80 per cent in Safety Assist technology.
Its Adult Occupant Protection score of 93 per cent was achieved due to full marks being awarded in side impact plus rescue and extraction tests, while the five remaining criteria came within one point of a perfect score.
An 89 per cent Child Occupant Protection result came thanks to perfect scores in the dynamic front and side impact tests, with its restraint installation and on-board safety features being hit with minor penalties of 0.19 and five points respectively.
The Cupra Born’s Safety Assist score of 80 per cent was awarded through full marks for its seat belt reminder and driver monitoring systems, with the speed assistance and lane support system scores missing out on full marks by 0.5 and 0.25 points.
ANCAP noted the Cupra Born does not have a speed limit function, leading to a score of 1.25 out of 3 for its speed assistance systems.
A 73 per cent result for Vulnerable Road User Protection was achieved through a perfect score for lower leg impacts, as well as strong results in the upper leg impact and plus its autonomous emergency braking forward pedestrian system.
The Born lost 8.33 points for head impacts, with ANCAP noting marginal and poor results for impacts recorded at the rear of the bonnet.
The Cupra Born is currently on sale ahead of its expected arrival before the end of April 2023, priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs.
