√Discount car registration for apprentice tradies living along the Victorian border

The Victorian Government has announced the expansion to a scheme, which will benefit apprentices residing in Victoria while working in border communities.

Eligible Victorian apprentices who travel across the border for work can obtain a 50 per cent discount on their vehicle’s registration and Transport Accident Charge.

Following the expansion of the Victorian Government’s Trade Apprentice Registration Discount scheme, apprentices in border communities can now reap the same benefits as those who live and work in Victoria only.

It means those living in Victoria and working in South Australia and New South Wales are now eligible for the discounted car registration.

“We’re putting more money back in the pockets of Victorian apprentices so they can get the skills they need for their future careers,” said Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne.

“Bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians and plumbers rely on our roads to get to and from each job – with many travelling across the border for work.”

Hundreds of tradies will benefit from the scheme, with an estimated 400 Victorians currently acquiring their apprenticeships in New South Wales and South Australia.

The Trade Apprentice Registration Discount was established in 2016 to minimise costs for apprentices using their own vehicle for work purposes.
