√2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro performance pick-up teased
Toyota appears set to give the 2024 Tacoma an off-road boost with the next-generation TRD Pro – and the next Toyota HiLux due in 2025 could benefit from the upgrades.
The US division of Toyota has continued to tease the new-generation Tacoma – the North American counterpart to the HiLux – after the car-maker published images of the mid-size pick-up’s off-road-focused TRD Pro variant.
In a post on social media platform Instagram, Toyota uploaded two images of the upcoming Tacoma’s flagship TRD Pro grade – previewing its Fox shocks, chunky off-road tyres and rear disc brakes.
Fox shocks have been available on the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro since 2016, but the inclusion of rear disc brakes marks the first time the pick-up has moved away from old-fashioned drum brakes on its back axle since it launched in 1995.
The latest round of teaser images follows the Tacoma Trailhunter’s preview last week, showing a rear bar and red recovery point from Australian company ARB – though it’s not clear whether the accessories will come standard on the Tacoma Trailhunter, or as optional extras available through Toyota dealerships.
While the Tacoma is sold exclusively in North America, the upcoming pick-up is expected to be based on the same architecture as the new-generation HiLux, as Toyota consolidates development of the two popular utes.
As reported by Drive in January 2023, the new-generation HiLux and Tacoma are understood to share their chassis and electronics systems – though the North American market pick-up will be fitted with a larger body, while Australia’s HiLux is thought to be similar in size to today’s model.
Reports out of the US have claimed the Tacoma – and the new HiLux – will be available with a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which develops up to 205kW and 430Nm in other Toyota and Lexus models.
However, a recent teaser from Toyota USA (above) showed an ‘iForce Max’ badge on the Tacoma TRD Pro’s tailgate – the name of the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine which powers the full-size Tundra pick-up.
In the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, the twin-turbo V6 engine develops up to 326kW and 790Nm, though a less powerful version of this engine could be fitted to the new Tacoma.
In Australia, the Toyota HiLux GR Sport is due to become the model’s most powerful variant when it arrives in local showrooms later this year, powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with up to 165kW and 550Nm.
