√SsangYong Torres ute among new three electric concepts

South Korean car maker SsangYong – now known as KG Mobility – has unveiled a concept of a battery-powered ute, alongside two rugged electric SUV show cars all due in showrooms within three years.

SsangYong has revealed three new electric-vehicle concepts – including a battery-powered ute – reportedly due in overseas showrooms by the end of 2025.

The South Korean car maker – which continues to trade as SsangYong in Australia, but was recently rebranded in South Korea as KG Mobility – unveiled the three concept vehicles alongside a new dual-motor electric-car architecture, due at a similar time.

The yellow O100 concept pictured is likely of most interest to SsangYong Australia, as it is an electric dual-cab ute based on the new Torres EVX electric SUV (codenamed U100), pictured here with additional off-road enhancements.

Plans for a ute version of the Torres were confirmed in 2021, when the SUV version was only known in petrol form under its development codename, J100.

The electric-vehicle platform underpinning it is capable of disabling or enabling the front and rear electric motors as required, with a flat floor to improve interior space.

It could use the BYD lithium iron phosphate battery pack from the Torres EVX, which is estimated to deliver 500km of claimed driving range in European testing, or 420km in South Korea.

The KG Mobility F100 concept is a large electric SUV with visual hints of a Toyota FJ Cruiser, including boxy proportions, a bold front LED light design, large off-road tyres, and further off-road accessories.

Meanwhile, the KR10 – which has previously been seen in leaked images, and officially previewed in teaser sketches two years ago – is believed to be a successor for today’s SsangYong Korando mid-size SUV.

It has off-road-friendly proportions similar to a Ford Bronco Sport (not the full-size Bronco) and Jeep Renegade, and takes inspiration from 1990s and 2000s Korando models, with a distinctive black front bumper insert, and circular LED headlights.

It is not clear if this vehicle is electric, or is intended to offer some form of petrol power.

Images of the three concept vehicles’ interiors haven’t been published, nor have any technical details been released – but it’s expected they all (or at least the two SUVs) ride on SsangYong/KG Mobility’s new electric-car architecture.

South Korean media reports say all three vehicles are destined for showrooms in their home market by the end of 2025. The ute is reportedly slated to launch in the first half of 2025.

Australian plans are unclear. The Torres is due in local showrooms with petrol power in late 2023 or early 2024, while the electric model is under evaluation for an Australian arrival.
