√Chevrolet Corvette recalled in Australia because its V8 is too loud

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 has been recalled in Australia because its V8 exhaust fell foul of local noise regulations.

There are 106 examples of the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette being recalled in Australia after local authorities found the V8-powered sports car failed drive-by noise limits.

The Corvette C8 is the first generation of the iconic sports car to be factory-built in right-hand drive and sold in Australia with the backing of US auto giant General Motors.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the drive-by exhaust noise exceeds the limit defined under Australian Design Rule 83/00 (ADR 83/00).

“ADR 83/00 defines the limits on external noise generated by motor vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds in order to limit the contribution of motor traffic to community noise.

“The vehicle is not compliant with ADR 83/00.”

ADR 83/00 states vehicles with more than 350kW – including the 369kW Chevrolet Corvette – must not produce an exhaust noise of more than 83 decibels. The recall does not state how far the Corvette’s exhaust exceeds the regulated limit.

General Motors has reported 314 Chevrolet Corvettes as sold locally since order books opened in July 2021.
