Cupra clocks-up 1000 hybrid and electric-car orders in Australia

VW-owned Spanish car brand Cupra says one-third of the vehicles ordered by its customers to date have been electric or plug-in hybrid.

Volkswagen-owned Spanish car maker Cupra has taken more than 1000 orders for hybrid and electric vehicles since it opened its doors in Australia 12 months ago, the company has announced.

Cupra says it has received 700 orders for the Born electric car since orders opened in December 2022 – including about 200 in the past two months – and 350 for plug-in hybrid versions of the Leon hatchback and Formentor SUV.

In total the company says it has taken “more than 3000 orders” over its first 12 months on sale locally. Over the same period it has delivered 2338 cars, to the end of May 2023.

The Born electric hatchback – launched in April 2023 – is now understood to be Cupra’s second most in-demand model behind the petrol-powered Formentor SUV in terms of orders, though it has only reported as sold fewer than 90 examples of the Born to date.

A batch of 400 Cupra Born electric hatchbacks were initially allocated to Australia late last year, before the factory increased the number of available cars to 600, then 700 – before deleting the cap on the number of vehicles that could be ordered locally from last month (May 2023).

Stock of the plug-in hybrids has been more limited, with a second batch of cars becoming available earlier this year after the first allocation was offered late last year.
