√Jeep says Artificial Intelligence is heading off-road
Jeep is exploring the use of autonomous driving technology in off-road situations.
Fully-autonomous driving might remain a work-in-progress, but Jeep thinks the technology is already suited for off-road applications.
The US car-maker is currently trailing artificial intelligence (AI) and driverless technology in its vehicles, to learn how the technology can operate in challenging off-road situations.
The AI and autonomous off-road driving technology developed by Jeep has been installed in two hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe test vehicles. According to Jeep, the purpose of this technology is to enhance the off-road driving experiences for both experienced and novice off-roaders, although it is so far unclear how exactly how the systems will operate.
The video below shows some of the trials conducted in the Moab desert in Utah, but does not provide any specific details as to what systems are in operation. An engineer can be seen using a tablet, hinting at a remote-operation capability of the vehicles.
Christian Meunier, the CEO of Jeep, stated that these features and technologies will have practical applications in a wide range of driving conditions, both on and off the trail.
“In the same way that our 4xe electrification takes Jeep brand’s off-road capability to new heights, these advanced off-road driving systems will help more customers in more countries around the world join and enjoy the adventure.
“These features and technology will have real-life applications on and off-road in a wide range of driving conditions,” said Meunier.
Along with the steps toward off-road autonomous driving, Jeep is expanding its presence in off-road electrification.
The brand currently offers a hybrid Wrangler 4xe in some markets and the hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe is slated for an Australian release later in 2023. Jeep has also detailed concepts of three new all-electric models that are also on the cards for Australian buyers.
Jeep plans to reveal more details about its autonomous off-road driving plans later this year.
