√Audi introduces YouTube integration in selected models
Audi adds rolls out a new in-car app store allowing access to YouTube and an expanded range of entertainment platforms, providing owners with new options when stopped or charging.
Audi has confirmed it will allow customers to install the YouTube app in its updated MMI infotainment system, though Australian customers may have to wait.
Available in Audi’s app store for the first time, it will be available to install in chosen models this year, with other Volkswagen Group brands following.
Selected 2024 model-year Audi cars equipped with the latest hardware and software cluster of the third-generation Modular Infotainment System (MIB 3) will be among the first to receive the YouTube integration. Models to receive this feature include the Audi A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 E-Tron, and Audi E-Tron GT.
While anyone in the car will be able to watch YouTubers on the central display screen, video playback is only permitted when the vehicle is parked.
To use third-party apps which require streaming data, an internet link is established through Audi’s embedded SIM card in the vehicle. As of now, the service is confirmed for Europe, Canada and the US, with mobile costs billed by data volume through a local telecom.
There is yet to be an official announcement regarding the availability of the service in Australia.
Along with YouTube, the new app store offers installing other applications according to Audi, including music, video, gaming, navigation, parking and charging, productivity, weather, and news. All these apps are directly installed into Audi’s MMI system, eliminating the need for a paired smartphone connection.
Adding functionality to YouTube, Premium account users will be able to log in and watch ad-free content through the integrated app.
One of the key features of the YouTube app is its accessibility during electric-car charging stops, driver breaks, or while waiting for kids at the school pick-up.
While Audi is pushing the use of its own app store and interface, its models will continue to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via its own optional interface.
