  • GLE-sized electric vehicle arrives with five seats
  • Four model grades at launch
  • Priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs

The electric 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is due in Australian showrooms in the coming weeks in a choice of four model grades.

As its name suggests the EQE SUV is the high-riding version of Mercedes-Benz’s new EQE sedan, and the electric counterpart – on different underpinnings – to the large GLE petrol and diesel SUV.

It is priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs for the rear-wheel-drive EQE300 SUV, rising to $189,900 plus on-road costs for the AMG EQE53 SUV performance model.

The EQE sedan is priced from $133,575 to $213,574 plus on-road costs, while the GLE wagon – which is about to receive a mid-life update – is priced from $119,174 plus on-road costs for the GLE300d diesel.

There will be four model grades at launch: the rear-wheel-drive EQE300 SUV, all-wheel-drive EQE350 4Matic SUV, EQE500 4Matic SUV, and performance-oriented AMG EQE53 4Matic+ SUV.

The EQE500 4Matic SUV will be “available from launch for a limited time,” and Mercedes-Benz claims it believes it will be “highly sought after.”

Measuring 4863mm long, 1940mm wide and 1686mm tall on a 3030mm wheelbase, the EQE SUV is 74mm shorter in overall length, 75mm narrower and 96mm lower, but is 35mm longer between the front and rear wheels.

A claimed 520 litres of boot space is on offer – with two rows of seats only, compared to an available three in a GLE – expanding to 1675L with the rear seats folded.

The EQE300 and EQE350 use a 89kWh battery, while the EQE500 and EQE53 upgrade to a 90.5kWh pack, good for “up to” 539 kilometres of claimed driving range in lenient NEDC lab testing.

The EQE300 SUV is powered by one rear-mounted electric motor with 180kW and 550Nm, while the all-wheel-drive EQE350 4Matic SUV steps up to 215kW and 760Nm from dual motors, good for 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.3 seconds.

The EQE500 quotes 300kW, 858Nm and 4.7 seconds for power, torque and 0-100km/h respectively, while the AMG EQE53 lists 460kW, 950Nm and 3.7 seconds in regular form – or 505kW, 1050Nm and 3.5 seconds in Boost or launch control modes with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus pack.

DC charging at up to 170kW is claimed in Europe, for a 10 to 80 per cent official charge time of “as little as 32 minutes” on a 350kW charger – or six and a half hours on a 22kW home wallbox.

All models are highly equipped, with the base model offering dual 12-inch screens, leather seats, 21-inch wheels, the AMG Line pack, a Burmester surround sound system, head-up display, panoramic sunroof, and a full suite of advanced safety technology.

More comprehensive standard equipment lists are below.
