√Totem GT Super modernises the classic Alfa Romeo Giulia with a twin-turbo V6 heart
Sports car-maker Totem has come full circle by returning to petrol power, after making a name in battery-powered sports cars.
Italian sports car remanufacturer Totem Automobili has past record in resto-modding vintage Italian sports cars with electric power, but the niche outfit has returned to the petrol engine in creating the new Totem GT Super.
Totem’s first release, in 2022, used the 1960s Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA as a donor car in order to create a battery-powered, environmentally-friendly rendition, which the marque insists does not compromise on driving experience.
But its latest model breathes new life again into the iconic Alfa Giulia by supplanting a purpose-designed twin-turbo V6 for the original non-turbo four-cylinder. This version is said to be for the Italians at heart who yearn “for the screaming motors that [we’ve] grown up with as kids.”
An engine transplant is an arduous task all on its own, but that’s just the start. The GT Super also adopts a new carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, upgraded Brembo four-piston brake calipers at the front and rear, billet aluminium double-wishbone suspension, power-steering, and a twin-turbocharged V6 engine.
While its styling remains faithful to the 1960s Alfa Romeo Giulia donor car, Totem has completely rebodied the sports car with new carbon-fibre body panels, added 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tyres, and equipped LED lights all round. The GT Super is modernised with niceties such as electric windows, a keyless-start system, digital radio, touchscreen infotainment, and an upgraded sound system.
Said to be the most lightweight and compact twin-turbo V6 engine in the world, the GT Super’s 2.8-litre engine is manufactured by Italtecnia Engineering and produces up to 551kW and 850Nm. This compares to an original Alfa Giulia’s 78kW power rating.
Drive is still sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, but the Totem GT Super introduces four separate driving modes: Turtle, Car, Plane, and Spaceship. Totem claims a 3.2-second zero-to-100km/h sprint and the vehicle is said to run on to an electronically-limited 250km/h.
While there is no price listed on its website, Totem invites customers worldwide to pre-order either the Totem GT Electric or the Totem GT Super.
