√US study shows electric cars have more tech glitches than petrol cars
A landmark study has unearthed a downside to the extra technology fitted to electric cars: more glitches than petrol vehicles.
Owners of electric vehicles encounter more problems with advanced technology than do drivers of petrol or diesel cars.
That’s the finding according to a study by US research firm JD Power in its latest report, the Tech Experience Index.
The study assessed owner experiences with advanced vehicle technology “as it first comes to market, and is an early measure of problems.”
The JD Power report found 17 of the 21 advanced features – which are offered on both petrol and electric cars – have more problems per 100 vehicles on electric vehicles than for petrol models.
The study findings were consistent with the results for petrol versus electric cars in the JD Power 2023 Initial Quality Study, the research firm said.
“Total vehicle problems in the (Initial Quality Study) is 46 per cent higher among electric vehicles (excluding Tesla) than petrol vehicles, and satisfaction is lower among owners of (electric vehicles),” the JD Power reported noted.
“Innovation through a strong advanced tech strategy is crucial for all vehicle manufacturers, especially those working to build their reputation in the electric vehicle space,” Kathleen Rizk, senior director of user experience benchmarking and technology at JD Power said in a media statement.
“The perception in the industry is that most (electric vehicles) should offer many advanced technologies to compete with high-tech entrants like Tesla.
“Success will be dependent on those manufacturers that can execute flawlessly, while ensuring the user experience is the same for those who are tech savvy and those who are not.”
