√Wild Toyota GR86 carbon-fibre rear spoiler unveiled for Japan

Toyota’s latest accessory body kit for its GR86 sports coupe includes a carbon-fibre rear spoiler that is not just for show.

The parts division of Japanese car giant Toyota has expanded its range of modifications for the Toyota GR86 sports coupe to include a bold carbon-fibre, ‘swan-neck’ rear wing that has a genuine impact on performance.

Toyota in Japan already offers a series of in-house-developed aerodynamic upgrades for the GR86 in its home market, including a stylised front bumper, sportier side skirts, and several rear spoiler options.

Now it has expanded the range with a ‘swan-neck’ style rear wing priced from 517,000 yen ($AU5500), which is recommended to complement the other upgrades – and is shown to increase downforce on the race track, rather than simply be for show.

Unlike conventional rear wings on performance cars – in which the wing struts are attached to the car on the horizontal surface of the boot – the GR86’s accessory wing uses ‘swan-neck’ aluminium supports that attach to the vertical surface of the boot lid.

The remainder of the rear wing is produced in carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic – a lightweight, strong material already used in Toyota vehicles such as the roof of the GR Yaris hot hatch.

Toyota says the shape of the wing was determined using aerodynamic simulations on a computer – known as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) – to optimise downforce without significant compromise due to drag resistance.

It is adjustable in three separate stages dependent on driving style and road conditions: zero degrees, 1.25 degrees, and 2.5 degrees. Toyota says the wing improves steering stability at high speeds and through cornering.

The Japanese brand recommends pairing the rear wing with the company’s GR aerodynamic package – which starts from 362,000 yen ($AU3850) – to prevent the car’s aerodynamics from being rear-biased.

All parts are applicable to the Toyota GR86 which is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine developing 174kW and 250Nm.

However, unfortunately for Australian GR86 owners, these parts are exclusive to Japan.
