√Police target hoons in two-night operation

A two-night police operation has resulted in several vehicles and drivers being removed from the roads.

Dozens of motorists in Melbourne’s southeast have been fined during a two-night anti-hoon operation conducted by police and government agencies.

In an effort to crack down on illegally-modified vehicles, Victoria Police – with the support of the Sheriff’s Office, the Environment Protection Authority, and the Department of Transport – targeted Springvale and Narre Warren areas during ‘Operation Hades’.

In total, 79 vehicles were defected, 57 vehicles failed to comply with registration standards, 40 drivers were caught speeding, 24 traffic offences were detected, 16 vehicles were clamped, 11 vehicles were unregistered, seven drivers were found to have drugs in their system, four drivers were disqualified, three were unlicenced, and another three drivers were detected with alcohol in their system.

A 25-year-old man was charged with drug possession, while a 19-year-old woman was arrested for assaulting a police officer.

Police also charged a 17-year-old male L-plater with participating in hoon behaviour and unlawful behaviour on council land.

Sheriffs served notices on 58 motorists concerning 953 outstanding warrants, with a combined value of more than $435,000 – including $185,000 of unpaid fines – with $81,000 immediately recouped.

“Modified vehicles are often seen in hoon events in the area; many of which are not fit to be on our roads,” Dandenong Achilles Taskforce Sergeant Paul Holtzinger said in a written statement.

“They not only cause unnecessary risk on our streets, but also create a feeling of intimidation and unease in the community.

“Police and residents are also fed up with the excessive noise emanating from these vehicles.

“We hold extensive intelligence on those connected to local hooning activities – if they decide to endanger others on the road, we’ll be there waiting for them.”
