√Toyota GR Corolla and GR Yaris wait times slashed to three months

After a rush of initial demand, it appears wait times for Toyota’s three-cylinder hot hatchbacks have been cut significantly.

Wait times for the Toyota GR Corolla and GR Yaris hot hatches have been reduced to three months in Australia going into 2024, according to a senior Toyota Australia executive.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley at a recent media event supply for both vehicles is “pretty good”, and that the vehicles are available “on an order basis.”

Priced from $64,190 plus on-road costs, the GR Corolla initially came to Australia in a batch of 725 vehicles for the first 12 months in 2023 – including 700 GTS five-seat variants and 25 Morizo two-seat editions.

However demand far outstripped supply, with more than 5000 expressions of interest from the Australian public. It is unclear how many vehicles Australia has been allocated for 2024.

When order books opened for the GR Yaris in 2020, the first 1000 cars were sold in one week – with a $39,990 drive-away offer price – and Toyota Australia closed the order books in mid-2021 as it worked on reducing the backlog.

Orders resumed in late 2022, with the vehicle available in limited numbers.

Powering both vehicles is a 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine known as the ‘G16E-GTS’, connected to a six-speed manual transmission driving all four wheels.

The smaller, lighter GR Yaris makes 200kW and 370Nm, while the GR Corolla makes 221kW and the same amount of torque.

The limited-edition two-seat Morizo variant of the GR Corolla gets an extra dose of torque – 400Nm – from the same three-cylinder engine, however this model has sold out for now.
