√Mitsubishi factory sold to make toilet paper
The brand’s “Pajero plant” in Japan has been sold to a sanitary paper product manufacturer.
Mitsubishi Motors Japan has announced a plan to sell its aptly-named ‘Pajero’ vehicle manufacturing facility to Japanese paper production company Daio Paper.
The facility is set to change hands between Mitsubishi Motors subsidiary Pajero Manufacturing and Daio Paper for a reported ¥8 billion, or approximately $AU90.5 million.
The decision comes after the facility stopped building the Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel-drive early in 2019. It also signals the first time Mitsubishi has shut a Japanese manufacturing site since 2001.
Located in the Gifu prefecture, Mitsubishi’s ‘Pajero plant’ produced nearly 500 cars a day at its peak, and about 170,000 vehicles a year.
By the end of the 2018 Japanese fiscal year, production had slumped by more than half to just 63,000 vehicles.
As a result of the closure, Mitsubishi Motors now has only two vehicle production facilities – the Okazaki and Mizushima plants – left in native Japan.
Purchaser of the facility Daio Paper claims it will use the site for “producing sanitary paper products, a category that includes tissues and toilet paper”.
