√Tesla Australia adds Enhanced Autopilot option
Want some of the perks of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving option, without the five-figure price tag? There’s now a cheaper option, known as Enhanced Autopilot.
Tesla has introduced a new Enhanced Autopilot option for all of its models in Australia, bridging the gap between the standard Autopilot suite, and Full Self-Driving.
Priced from $5100 (before Luxury Car Tax), the option is available on all four Tesla models – Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X – and adds a number of functions previously exclusive to the $10,100 ‘Full Self-Driving’ suite.
These comprise automatic lane changes on freeways, hands-free automatic parking, the Summon feature (which lets the car manoeuvre itself around car parks in certain scenarios), and Navigate on Autopilot, billed as “automatic driving from highway on-ramp to off-ramp”.
That’s on top of the ‘Basic Autopilot’ package that comes standard, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane following assist.
Buyers willing to spend more can still select the $10,100 Full Self-Driving Capability option, which is said to include ‘Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control’, which Tesla says “designed to slow down and stop for visible traffic lights or stop signs that are detected”.
It also includes Autosteer – autonomous steering, as the name implies – for use on city streets, however this isn’t available in any global market.
While Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system has been available to option for a number of years in Australia, the majority of its features have been limited to a beta testing program exclusively available in the US.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk indicated this week that the Full Self-Driving beta could become available in right-hand-drive countries as soon as “later this year” – which may include Australia.
Pricing and specifications for the Tesla Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV are unchanged, alongside the introduction of Enhanced Autopilot.
The Model S and Model X continue to be available to pre-order on Tesla’s website without any pricing details or arrival timing. Price for Enhanced Autopilot on these models are not listed.
