With Porsche determined to keep the 911 with internal-combustion power, is there a gap for a new electric sports coupe?

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 was revealed in full this week as the second dedicated electric car from the Korean brand.

Hyundai refers to the Ioniq 6 four-door body as a ‘streamliner’ due to its aerodynamic shape, designed to cut through the air and reduce resistance to improve driving range.

However, artist Theottle thought the unusual shape lends itself more to a two-door, creating these digital renderings of what an electric coupe would look like.

Named the Ioniq 116, the Korean coupe flips the idea of a Porsche 911 on its head – with Porsche’s top brass expressing their desire to keep internal-combustion engines in the 911 for as long as possible, and the company investing in synthetic fuels to help achieve this.

Meanwhile, our imagined Ioniq 116 delivers 239kW and 605Nm from dual electric motors to all four wheels, borrowed from the range-topping Ioniq 6 sedan.

With a shorter wheelbase and lighter body, the Hyundai coupe could hit 100km/h from a standstill in less than five seconds, with a range of more than 630km from a single charge available thanks to its 77.4kWh battery.

Sporty coupes may have fallen by the wayside in recent years with the dominance of SUVs in the market – Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ being the few exceptions at the affordable end of the market – but perhaps a well-priced electric two-door could help spur a revival?
