√2023 Honda Civic Type R power output, price leaked

Power and torque outputs are up for the new Honda Civic Type R – as are prices – new overseas reports suggest.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R may quote mild increases in power and torque over its predecessor – and a price rise to match – according to leaked information published online.

Multiple sources – via Carscoops, Creative Trend and Japanese writer Azusa Ito – report the new Civic Type R’s 2.0-litre turbo engine will develop 243kW (330 metric horsepower) and 420Nm in its home market, once the first cars reach Honda showrooms there later this year.

Those figures represent increases of 10 metric horsepower (8kW) and 20Nm over the current model in Japan, which offers 235kW/400Nm – placing the new Type R among the hottest hatchbacks on sale without a luxury-car badge.

Australian versions of the outgoing Type R are down 7kW, at 228kW, to allow the car to run on local 95-octane ‘premium’ fuel – rather than Europe and Japan’s higher-quality, more widespread 98-octane unleaded, with fewer parts per million of sulphur.

Honda Australia – and USA, where the same reduced tune applied – is yet to confirm if the new Civic Type R will be detuned for our market once again. If it is the case, expect outputs in Australia of 235kW and 420Nm – conveniently matching an all-wheel-drive Volkswagen Golf R.

Alongside the leaked outputs, Japanese website Creative Trend – not explicitly citing a source – claims the new ‘FL5’ Civic Type R will be priced from 4,997,300 yen ($AU52,700) – up five per cent on the outgoing FK8 Type R’s 4,752,000 yen ($AU50,100) base price.

In Australia, the outgoing FK8 Civic Type R was priced from $54,990 plus on-road costs – though Honda Australia has since switched to a fixed-price business model, with nationwide, non-negotiable drive-away pricing.

If the leaked Japanese prices are accurate, expect a local starting price of beyond $60,000 drive-away – though it remains to be seen how close the on-the-road price will get to $65,000.

A $60,000-plus drive-away price for the Type R would create space between it and the standard, petrol-only Civic VTi LX automatic hatch, at $47,200 drive-away – with the upcoming hybrid variant to fit in between at about $50,000.

Revealed last week, the new Type R pairs its tuned-up 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with a standard six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

The evolutionary powertrain is clothed in a more conservatively-styled body than the old ‘FK8’ Type R – while the interior benefits from the larger interior screens and new styling of the standard 11th-generation Civic hatchback.
