Tech giant Google is working a new version of its Google Maps software aimed at saving motorists money.

First reported by 9to5Google, a beta update to Google Maps (version 11.39) will allow users to choose the most efficient route for their drive, depending on fuel type.

While the software currently has the ability to choose fuel-saving routes, the update enables user to specify whether their car is a petrol, diesel, hybrid or fully-electric vehicle.

This will give a unique route for each fuel types, given there are strengths and weaknesses to each of the four powertrains available.

For example, petrol and diesel cars are more efficient at medium to high speeds than electric vehicles, which are able to shine in low-speed conditions with regular acceleration and deceleration.

On long drives, Google Maps will also incorporate charging locations in the most convenient places for electric vehicle drivers, planning smarter and faster trips.

Google Maps is available on Apple and Android devices, with both featuring the ability to mirror the app to their respective Apple CarPlay and Android Auto vehicle systems in applicable cars.
