√2015-2018 Subarus recalled in Australia: Nearly 80,000 affected
A faulty electronic park brake could cause certain Subaru vehicles to roll away while parked, according to the recall notice.
Subaru Australia has recalled 78,617 examples of its 2015-2018 Subaru Liberty, Outback and Levorg, as well as 2017-2019 Subaru Impreza and XV models, citing a fault with the electronic park brake.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing issue, the Electronic Park Brake (EPB) adaptor cord connector may not operate as intended. This could result in vehicle moving or rolling away whilst the vehicle is engaged in the park position.
“If the vehicle moves from its parked position while unattended, it may increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

“There have been no reports locally regarding this issue in Australia. Additionally, there have been no reported injuries, accidents, or deaths due to this issue,” said a spokesperson for Subaru Australia.
“Over time, external chemical contamination and/or a manufacturing issue may cause a crack in the lock tab portion of the Electronic Park Brake (EPB) adaptor cord connector. In a worst-case scenario, this may result in a disconnection of the adaptor and the EPB to potentially not operate or release as intended. If the adaptor disconnects, a dash warning light will illuminate.
“If the failure was to occur, affected vehicles parked on an incline may, in a worst-case scenario, unintentionally roll away after being parked, increasing the risk of an accident and injury to pedestrians or other road users. In the event of a serious accident this may result in death. Consequently, Subaru Australia will conduct a Recall Campaign to rectify the concern.”
A full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 78,617 vehicles involved in the recall can be found here.
Subaru Australia advises: “The rectification work consists of inspection of the Electronic Parking Brake adapter cord connector, and if required, attachment of a retaining clip. The rectification procedure takes 0.5 hours.” Owners can find more information here.
