√Electric Hummer line-up could expand with mid-size pick-up

Overseas reports claim General Motors is considering an addition to the electric Hummer range with a small model that would be closer in size to the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

A new mid-size electric Hummer ute could soon join the line-up in North America, according to a leaked report out of the US.

News outlet Bloomberg says General Motors is considering developing a smaller Hummer pick-up to be sold alongside the current model, opening the door for exporting the Hummer brand into more international markets.

While the vehicle is purportedly just a design concept right now, the smaller Hummer would give GM the ability to compete against an electric Ford Ranger Lightning ute in the US and Australia, along with other promised electric pick-ups like the Tesla Cybertruck.

A spokesperson for the company’s GMC division declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report.

GM has previously offered multiple models under the Hummer brand. The original and most iconic Hummer – the civilian version of the military Humvee truck, made between 1992 and 2002 – eventually spawned the Hummer H2 (2002-2009), but it was the smaller Hummer H3 that was sold in Australia by Holden in 2007 and 2008.

Powered by an unusual 3.7-litre five-cylinder petrol engine producing 180kW and 328Nm, the Hummer H3 offered low-range four-wheel drive and the option of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

While the US car giant has yet to confirm whether there is a mid-size Hummer ute in development, but it’s possible the vehicle could ride on GM’s BEV2 electric vehicle architecture – the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Celestiq, and the future Honda Prologue.

Like the current GMC Hummer EV pick-up and SUV, the smaller model would likely offer all-wheel drive and big performance numbers.

The Hummer on sale in the US now promises 746kW and an estimated torque figure of between 1485Nm and 2033Nm from its three electric motors – enough to send the 4100kg pick-up to 100km/h from a standstill in a claimed 3.1 seconds.
