√Need to move a large load? These are the biggest big vans you can drive on a car licence

We look at the limit of integrated big-box transport – as anything bigger is quite literally a truck!

If you’ve got to carry things around, there’s nothing worse than running out of space.

And while vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offer a number of different wheelbase and roof height combinations, how big can you go before you need a larger format (like a small truck) or a bigger licence?

We’ve taken a look at the largest version of the seven big vans available to drive on a regular car licence (under a GVM or gross vehicle mass of 4.5-tonne) and identified some key measurements.

Of these vehicles, the Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, LDV Deliver 9, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Renault Master and Volkswagen Crafter are offered in a variety of sizes and in many cases, drive types. Only the Peugeot Boxer is available in a one-size-fits (or doesn’t fit) everything configuration.

Make – Model Variants $ from $ to Drive options Wheelbase options Roof options
Fiat Ducato 4 $52,050 $60,700 FWD Mid / Long / Ex-Long Low / Mid
Ford Transit 7 $53,590 $63,090 FWD / RWD Long / Ex-Long Mid / High
LDV Deliver 9 5 $44,727 $49,464 RWD Mid / Long Mid / High
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 22 $60,626 $84,743 FWD / RWD / AWD Short / Mid / Long / Ex-Long Mid / High
Peugeot Boxer 1 $54,527 $54,527 FWD Long Mid
Renault Master 8 $48,600 $59,200 FWD / RWD Short / Mid / Long / Ex-Long Low / Mid / High
Volkswagen Crafter 27 $54,190 $73,290 FWD / RWD / AWD Mid / Long / Ex-Long Low / Mid / High

In terms of vastness, the extra-long Renault Master with a high-roof provides the largest cargo volume, at 17-cubic-meters. The Master also provides flexibility for the largest payload at 2242kg, albeit in the long rather than extra-long variant (RWD 120kW manual).

Long load management comes by way of the Volkswagen Crafter, with a 4490 wheelbase, 7391mm overall length and an interior load area of 4855mm.

If you’ve got something tall though, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (which is only a few millimetres shorter than the Crafter) offers an interior load height up to 2243mm with an exterior height of 2855mm – just enough to squeeze under the Montague Street Bridge in Melbourne.

Make – Model Max. Volume Max. Wheelbase Max. Length Max. Load length Max. Height Max. Load height Max. Payload
Fiat Ducato 15m³ 4035mm 6363mm 4070mm 2534mm 1932mm 2015kg
Ford Transit 15.1m³ 3750mm 6704mm 4256mm 2790mm 2025mm 1061kk
LD Deliver 9 12.3m³ 3760mm 5940mm 3413mm 2755mm 2014mm 1620kg
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 15.5m³ 4325mm 7367mm 4751mm 2855mm 2243mm 1146kg
Peugeot Boxer 13m³ 4035mm 5998mm 3707mm 2522mm 1932mm 1558kg
Renault Master 17m³ 4332mm 6875mm 4383mm 2808mm 2048mm 2132kg
Volkswagen Crafter 15.5m³ 4490mm 7391mm 4855mm 2637mm 1861mm 1797kg

If you want to go a bit bigger though, there is another option in the Iveco Daily van.

The Iveco isn’t classed specifically as a ‘passenger’ vehicle, despite offering two variants with under 4500kg GVM. In this van’s largest configuration you can carry up to 19.6m³ of cargo, using. 4100mm wheelbase and 7674mm overall length. The maximum height of 2945mm is probably a little to scary for us to try under a low 3-meter bridge, so best approach slowly!

If you need that little more weight and can take a medium-rigid licence test, the Iveco, Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter have the option to extend the GVM beyond 4.5-tonne, to 5000kg (Mercedes and VW) and 7000kg (Iveco).
