√Uber Carshare launches after purchase of Car Next Door
Car Next Door is no more, following the company’s sale to US rideshare giant Uber.
Australian peer-to-peer vehicle sharing start-up Car Next Door has been rebranded as Uber Carshare after the start-up was sold to the US rideshare giant in January 2022.
Car Next Door launched locally in 2013 to enable drivers to rent privately-owned cars by the hour or day, providing an income to people who may not use their vehicles all the time, as well as being a convenient service for those who either don’t own a car or find themselves without transport temporarily.
In 2019, it was found those who participate in car sharing drive approximately 40 per cent less than those who own cars.
“It’s because you are paying per use. Humans are creating too many carbon emission and the way people look at transport should be part of the effort to reduce that,” company founder Will Davies said at the time.

“It’s all very well and good to have that goal, but if it doesn’t have an economic benefit, it’s not going to work. So we are trying to give people easy access to cars just around the corner.”
US tech company Uber rose to prominence after launching an app which allowed people to offer lifts to passengers in their private vehicles, upending the taxi industry almost overnight.
The company’s purchase of Car Next Door earlier this year appears to have been in preparation for a forthcoming launch of Uber Carshare in the US.
