√Here are the massive fines for riding in a trailer to steady a fridge

Don’t try this when moving home. A photo of a man riding in a trailer while holding onto a fridge went viral during the week. It has since been revealed there are at least 1000 reasons this is a bad idea in the eyes of the law.

A Victorian motorist is facing a loss of three demerit points and more than $1000 in traffic fines after carrying another person – and an unsecured fridge – in a trailer on a busy Melbourne road.

An image uploaded to social media platform Facebook, shows a man steadying a fridge in a trailer, which is being towed behind a Mazda3 hatchback.

The caption claims the photo was taken along Melbourne’s North Road, which stretches from the south-east suburb of Clayton to the waterfront at North Point.

While the driver and the passenger in the trailer may have been trying to save money by not paying for the fridge to be delivered, their adventure could result in fines exceeding $1000.

Both the driver of the vehicle – and the person in the trailer – could be slapped with massive fines and demerit points penalties.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police told Drive the fine for carrying an unsecured load is a $277 fine for individuals, provided there was no danger to a person, or risk of damage to a property or the environment.

However, this fine is increased to $645 if it is determined the unsecured load poses a danger to people, property or the environment.

The driver can be fined for carrying a passenger in a part of the car which was not designed for the purpose – a $370 ticket and 3 demerit points.

The passenger is also in line to cop a $370 ticket and 3 demerit points given they were travelling “in or on part of motor vehicle not designed for carriage of passengers or goods”.

Between January and August 2022, toll-road operator Transurban claims its incident response crews have intervened in more than 430 near-misses on Melbourne toll roads caused by unsecured loads.

Below is a list of fines and demerit point penalties for driving without a seatbelt or with an unsecured load in Australia.
