√GWM Haval P04: China’s latest Toyota LandCruiser rival spied – report
A new seven-seater from GWM Haval has been caught on camera, as the company continues to target the large SUV segment.
Images have appeared online overnight showing an SUV version of the GWM King Kong Cannon pick-up.
Spy photos of the GWM Haval – codenamed P04 – were published by Car News China, showing the ute-based SUV in a camouflage wrap, with the vehicle due to be unveiled in China in the fourth quarter of 2023 (October to December inclusive).
Like other ute-based SUVs such as the Ford Everest, the P04 shares its ladder-frame chassis and engines with the King Kong Cannon pick-up.

These include 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines – albeit in higher states of tune, with 147kW and 172kW respectively – with power being sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
However, the P04’s dimensions make it approximately 185mm longer than the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.
While exact numbers haven’t been confirmed, the Haval is believed to be about 5200mm long, slightly less than 2000mm wide, and 1800mm high – compared to the LandCruiser at 5015mm long, 1980mm wide, and 1950mm high.

Despite its considerable size, Great Wall Motors could position the Haval P04 as a roomier competitor to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner, and Isuzu MU-X, leaving its cousin – the V6-powered GWM Tank 500 – to fight the Toyota Prado and LandCruiser 300 Series.
Representatives for GWM have previously told Drive the King Kong Canon is under consideration for Australia, leaving the door open for the P04 to eventually join the ute as part of the GWM Haval range.
Drive has contact GWM Australia and this story will be updated with the company’s response.
