√Renault Espace five- and seven-seat SUV under consideration for Australia

The family SUV reboot of Renault’s futuristic people-mover is due in European showrooms this year. Could it come to Australia?

The remodelled Renault Espace – once one of the motoring world’s most futuristic people-movers, but now set to become a five- or seven-seat SUV – is under consideration for Australia.

The next-generation Renault SUV – a stretched version of the new Renault Austral small SUV available overseas – is due to be unveiled in Europe in the coming months and go on sale in the second half of this year.

However, despite its popularity overseas, the Renault Espace has never been sold in Australia.

Production of a right-hand-drive variant was dropped with the current generation introduced in 2015, so it would represent quite a U-turn if the new model was engineered to be ambidextrous.

“We think (the new Renault Espace) could work well in Australia, if it is made available in right-hand drive and the business case stacks up,” the boss of Renault Australia, Glen Sealey, told a recent media briefing.

“It’s important under the current market conditions that we … still have (petrol engine vehicles) in the range for affordability – alongside electric models.

“There’s no getting around the fact that an electric car is much more expensive than (a petrol car).

“And there’s still a need for people at the lower price end of the market who need mobility.

“So it’s important to keep petrol engines alive, to cater for all tastes and all price ranges.”
