√Alfa Romeo supercar to be “sold out” before it is revealed, says company boss
Alfa Romeo has been taking deposits for its new supercar before it has been given the green light by its parent company.
Alfa Romeo’s upcoming supercar has almost sold out – as a final bow for petrol power – according to the company’s CEO, even though the model is yet to be approved for production.
In November 2022, UK publication Autocar reported Alfa Romeo is working on a bespoke flagship model, with the car-maker’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, indicating it would be revealed in the first half of 2023.
Last week, the executive told Autocar Alfa Romeo has started to take deposits for the supercar, but expects them all to be accounted for before it is unveiled – though the car-maker’s parent company, Stellantis, is not due to sign off the bespoke model for production until April 2023.
“It will be sold out before I unveil the car”, Mr Imparato told Autocar.
“We are working on something that I could put aside the 8C [sports coupe of the late 2000s] in the museum of Arese, being proud of our contribution to the history of Alfa Romeo. That is what we want.
“It could be iconic, super-sexy and recognisable as an Alfa Romeo at first sight.
“It’s not done yet, but it’s ongoing. The positioning is ongoing. We have so many fans asking for something special,” the executive said.
Mr Imparato also insinuated the supercar will be powered by a petrol engine rather than electric motors – supporting previous reports it will use a version of the Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 which currently powers the range-topping Giulia sedan.
“To take this type of decision in 2022 in a group like Stellantis, everyone considers that you are completely mad,” Mr Imparato said, referencing the parent company’s target to have a 100 per cent electric-only model line-up in Europe by 2030.
By 2025, all mainstream Alfa Romeo models sold worldwide will be electric, while it will completely ditch petrol and diesel engines by 2027.
Alfa Romeo’s first new electric car is expected to launch in 2024 as a city SUV – twinned with the Jeep Avenger – while electric replacements to the Giulia and Stelvio are due in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
In Australia, Alfa Romeo’s current line-up comprises the Giulia hatch and Stelvio SUV, although the new Tonale is due in Australian showrooms in February 2023 – the first of the Italian car-maker’s models available with hybrid technology.
