√2021-2022 Peugeot 3008 and 508 plug-in hybrids recalled due to fire risk

Peugeot’s plug-in hybrid 3008 GT Sport and 508 GT have been recalled after two separate battery system faults were discovered, increasing fire risk.

Peugeot Australia has recalled up to 108 examples of its plug-in hybrid 2021-2022 Peugeot 3008 GT Sport SUV and 508 GT sedan, citing a fault with the battery system in both electrified vehicles that could spark a fire.

The Peugeot plug-in hybrids have been included in two recalls – one which affects 106 cars, the other takes in 108 examples.

The 106-car recall is related to the 3008 GT Sport and 508 GT’s high-voltage battery reinforcing plate, while the 108-car recall refers to a battery management system software error – both of which could cause a fire.

The first recall notice , lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing issue, certain plug-in hybrid electric vehicles may not have had the high voltage battery reinforcing plate or battery cover coated with a protective wax. If water intrudes, there is a risk of perforation or corrosion of the battery reinforcing plate/battery cover over the life of the vehicle.

“If left unrepaired, there is a risk that the perforation/corrosion could weaken the battery reinforcing plate/battery cover affecting the high voltage battery security. This may result in the breakdown of the vehicle and/or may result in the potential for a battery or vehicle fire. A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders.”

Peugeot’s second recall says: “Due to a software program error, the battery management system software may cause the high voltage battery to overheat and/or emit smoke.

“If left unrepaired, this may result in a potential battery or vehicle fire whilst the vehicle is being recharged and/or in use. A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders.”
