√Video: Motorsport crash nearly ends in disaster as car rolls into oncoming traffic

Even when your racing day is over, this video shows why you need to apply your handbrake – and some common sense.

A minor motorsport accident at the recent 2023 GB3 Championship round at Oulton Park in the UK nearly became a disaster as one of the crashed cars rolled backwards onto the track – just as the racing field was approaching.

A video of the incident, shared on YouTube, shows the aftermath of a collision between Australian driver Costa Toparis in the number-43 car and UK local McKenzy Cresswell in car 16.

The drivers both exited their cars and were being escorted from the track by safety marshals when Toparis’ damaged 43-racer started rolling back onto the circuit, just as the rest of the field was approaching.

Marshals can bee seen waving yellow flags as the stricken GB3 racer moves slowly back through a right-hand bend, and is miraculously avoided by seventeen cars passing at speed.

The GB3 category (formally known as Formula 4) is a feeder series that allows young drivers to make the transition from go-karts to single-seat open-wheel race cars. Current Mercedes-McLaren Formula 1 driver George Russell won the championship in 2014.

All GB3 race cars use the same carbon-fibre chassis (weighing 598kg including driver) and are powered by a 186kW 2.0-litre Ford Duratec race engine and six-speed sequential transmission.

Even with the incident at Oulten Park, Cresswell is in 8th position in the overall 2023 GB3 Championship where Toparis is in 9th.
