Kanye West drives an unexpected Isuzu SUV
What car does Kanye West drive? The controversial rapper has selected an Isuzu VehiCross in a very bold colour as his daily driver.
Like much of his behaviour, Kanye West’s choice of car can be described in one word: unexpected.
In mid-June 2023, the controversial rapper was spotted driving a Isuzu VehiCross through Los Angeles, alongside his Melbourne-born partner, Bianca Censori.

West, who has been condemned in recent months for using horrific anti-Semitic slurs, was filmed driving the Japanese off-roader along LA’s Sunset Strip by the operator of a Hollywood tour bus.
According to the video posted to Instagram by Hollywood Bus Tours, West’s VehiCross is wearing large blacked-out wheels and a bold shade of yellow – one of the model’s factory paint offerings.
The Isuzu VehiCross was a two-door, four-wheel-drive crossover that launched back in 1997, based on a concept car Isuzu debuted at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show.
With its eye-catching design, the production version of the VehiCross was virtually unchanged from its futuristic concept design.
The off-road-ready VehiCross was sold in limited numbers (only 5958 rolled off the production line in total) across the 1997 to 2001 model years. Sadly for lovers of its unique design, it was never sold in Australia.
Reviewers at the time called the VehiCross: “The sexiest Isuzu ever, and it may well be the sexiest of all sport-utility vehicles”.
Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 making 160kW and 312kW, the VehiCross used the short-wheelbase platform from the Isuzu Trooper – sold in Australia as the Holden Jackaroo.
The VehiCross was co-designed by influential Japanese designer Shiro Nakamura, who worked as the Chief Creative Officer of Nissan, Datsun and Infiniti.
While West’s choice of vehicle might come as a surprise – given celebrities typically opt for more understated luxury SUVs – it’s not the first time the rapper has displayed an interest in Japanese cars.
West and Censori also own a Toyota Mega Cruiser customised by San Diego-based conversion company Camplife Customs, which took the massive off-roader from army green to all-white, with a custom-made canvas roof.

The Mega Cruiser debuted in 1995 and is the largest Toyota ever built, with a design reminiscent of the iconic Humvee military vehicles.
It was sold exclusively in Japan and was intended for military use. It’s estimated 3000 were ever produced, with only 133 of those sold to civilians.
West’s choice of cars is somewhat ironic given so many of his song lyrics reference Japanese models from the likes of Toyota and Datsun in a somewhat negative light.
In 2005’s ‘Gold Digger’ he rapped: “But while y’all washin’, he gon’ make it to a Benz out of that Datsun”.
In his song with Jay-Z and Rihanna, ‘Run This Town’, West says: “What you think I rap for, to push a f***in’ RAV4?”
