√Renault 5 electric hot hatch teased
French car-maker Renault has provided its first, thinly-veiled look at the retro-inspired Renault 5 electric hatchback, as the final prototypes hit the road ahead of showroom arrivals next year.
French car-maker Renault has again teased its retro-designed electric Renault 5 hatchback, this time in prototype form.
The production model looks set to retain the concept’s bold proportions and compact five-door body design, although the inclusion of traditional front-door handles, smaller alloy wheels, and standard mirrors are a departure from the concept’s form.
Behind the scenes, Renault’s Global Production Engineering Centre is developing more than 60 prototypes to undergo real-world testing, according to a statement issued by the car-maker.
Each vehicle will serve as a technically representative version of the upcoming production model to undergo extensive testing.
Currently, the centre is focused on producing “vehicle check” prototypes which are being driven on European roads for final adjustments.
The Prototype Build Centre operates as a link between product design and large-scale production. By using developed processes, tools, and parts, the centre facilitates a transition from prototype to mass production at Renault’s Douai plant in France. A key advantage of the Global Production Engineering Centre is its close proximity with the Renault 5 development teams at Renault’s Technocentre.
While pricing of the showroom model is yet to be announced, Renault has previously targeted a price starting from less than the equivalent of $AU40,000.
The distributor of Renault vehicles in Australia has expressed interest in the Renault 5 though it is not yet confirmed for the local market.
