- 620kW/1400Nm plug-in hybrid has supercar acceleration
- Regular GT63 V8 no longer available
- Priced from $399,900 plus on-road costs
The most powerful series-production car to wear the Mercedes badge is now on sale in Australia – the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid – from $399,900 plus on-road costs.
After multiple delays – which were meant to see the vehicle in showrooms before the end of last year – the GT63 S E Performance is the plug-in hybrid version of Mercedes-AMG’s flagship twin-turbo V8 sedan.
The regular, non-hybrid version is no longer sold, and the plug-in hybrid is now the only model variant.
It is priced from $399,900 plus on-road costs – making it the most expensive Mercedes-AMG model on sale in Australia today, though not the all-time most expensive, which remains the circa-$800,000 GT Black Series coupe of 2021.
The GT63 S E Performance combines a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 developing 470kW and 900Nm with a 150kW electric motor for system outputs of 620kW and 1400Nm.
It will be the most powerful Mercedes vehicle ever delivered in Australia, exceeding the 537kW/900Nm GT Black Series.
While eight examples of the circa-750kW, Formula One-derived AMG One hypercar have reportedly been sold to Australian buyers, none are expected to be registered on local roads as the car will only be built in left-hand drive.
Mercedes-AMG claims a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 2.9 seconds, thanks to all-wheel drive and a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.
The lithium-ion battery in the rear of the car can store 6.1kWh, and has been designed in conjunction with the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team for rapid discharges and recharges, rather than a long electric driving range.
The 150kW electric motor is positioned on the rear axle and is integrated with its own two-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential.
Electric driving range is claimed as just 12km – while fuel economy in mixed driving of 7.7 litres per 100km is quoted.
Standard equipment includes dual 12.3-inch interior screens, heated and cooled front seats, a 14-speaker Burmester sound system, adaptive air suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, rear-wheel steering, and a suite of advanced safety features.
