√Hydrogen coming soon to selected Ampol service stations

While hydrogen vehicles are yet to be made available to the public in Australia – beyond restricted fleet trials – petrol company Ampol is making plans to introduce the alternative fuel to its service stations.

Australian petrol giant Ampol has announced it has teamed up with US-based company OneH2 to bring hydrogen refuelling facilities to its service stations.

While no timeline has been given on the roll-out, Ampol says it will initially target trucks and other fleets utilising hydrogen technology.

Ampol had previously announced a partnership with Fusion Fuel Green for a proposed solar-powered hydrogen production plant in Queensland, however the company told Argus Media the project had been paused as of August 2022.

It’s understood Ampol’s new partner, OneH2, has been designing, manufacturing, and installing hydrogen refuelling facilities across the US for almost a decade.

Hyundai, Toyota, and BMW are among a number of car companies developing hydrogen vehicles for mass production globally – either as an alternative fuel for internal-combustion engines (rather than petrol), or as a fuel-cell, which converts the hydrogen to electricity to power a battery and electric motors.

It’s believed the transportation industry could adopt hydrogen for long-haul heavy trucks – given refuelling times are on par with petrol and diesel – rather than relying on heavy batteries and long electricity recharging times.

Both Hyundai and Toyota have built hydrogen refuelling facilities to support their hydrogen passenger vehicles – offered in limited numbers to government and business fleets – while hydrogen refuelling stations have also opened along Australia’s east coast for heavy commercial vehicles and buses.
