√Ferrari patents car with a two-joystick steering system
The Italian luxury car maker is looking to challenge the traditional steering wheel design with a futuristic concept.
Ferrari is looking to challenge the concept of the traditional steering wheel after filing for a patent for a two-joystick steering system.
As first reported by US publication Motor Authority, Ferrari’s design concept was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 16 November 2023 – with the original patent filing submitted on 8 May 2023.
According to the patent images, the two joysticks are reportedly located on each side of the driver’s seat, enabling motorists to direct the vehicle using a combined movement of the two levers.
However, it appears as if the joysticks may do the same thing – forward, brake, left, and right – while the vehicle retains standard brake and throttle pedals.
It is unclear if the Italian luxury car manufacturer is looking to include the joystick steering wheel system in future production vehicles.
Various car makers have previously challenged the traditional steering wheel concept – with electric auto giant Tesla looking to a yoke design as an optional feature on their Model S and Model X variants, according to previous Drive reports.
While the joystick steering system is generally seen in commercial aircraft, some vehicle manufacturers have looked into the possibility of including it in future car models.
Previously, German luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz unveiled an F200 concept that features the two-lever steering system at the 2022 Paris Motor Show – Hyundai’s ‘Prophecy’ concept vehicle primarily focuses on autonomous driving but showcased two joysticks mounted in the armrests.
